SPRTS — A New Scheme to Reuse & Transform Sports Equipment Across Cheshire & Merseyside

The Reuse Initiative CIC is preparing to launch a new programme known as SPRTS — the Sports Partners Reuse & Transformation Scheme, a new community-driven programme designed to rescue, repair, reuse and upcycle unwanted or damaged sports equipment from clubs across the region.

Every year, grassroots teams, schools and professional clubs dispose of tonnes of footballs, goals, nets, boots and training equipment — much of it repairable or suitable for reuse. SPRTS provides a simple, zero-cost solution: clubs partner with the scheme, The Reuse Initiative collects surplus or broken equipment, and everything is either repaired for use locally or creatively transformed into new community resources.

A Sustainable, Circular Approach to Sport

SPRTS tackles two growing challenges in sport:

  • Rising equipment costs for families and grassroots teams
  • Increasing waste from damaged goals, nets, boots, balls and mixed plastics

Through specialist repair, recycling and upcycling methods, the scheme keeps sports equipment in circulation for as long as possible — helping families facing financial hardship while reducing environmental impact.

Supporting Local Communities

Refurbished items are distributed to:

  • Low-income families
  • Community groups
  • Youth and disability sports programmes
  • Schools and grassroots football clubs

Any materials that cannot be reused are transformed into creative items such as benches, seating, agility ladders, training aids, garden planters or recycled-plastic pellets.

Partners We Are Looking to Approach

The Reuse Initiative is now inviting partnerships from:

  • Local grassroots clubs
  • National League clubs
  • EFL clubs
  • Premier League sustainability & foundation teams across Merseyside and the North West

Clubs receive:

  • Free collection of unwanted kit
  • Environmental impact reporting
  • SPRTS Partner recognition badge
  • Positive PR and community engagement opportunities

A Message From The Reuse Initiative CIC

“SPRTS is about more than just recycling. It’s about giving families access to sport, keeping equipment out of landfill, and building partnerships that strengthen local communities. In a cost-of-living crisis, no child should miss out on sport due to cost or waste.”
